Report from Workshop 2 on Research: "Teaching and Researching Genocide From a Comparative Perspective" Presentation by Professor Kristian Gerner Presentation by Professor Robert Melson Presentation by Dr. Christian P. Scherrer Presentation by Professor Robert Melson Melson, Robert F. Presentation by Professor Robert Melson The equivalence fallacy suggests that because some atrocity or genocide was similar in some way to the Holocaust it therefore is in essence equivalent to it. The uniqueness fallacy suggests that because there are unique features to the Holocaust it cannot be compared to any other instance of genocide. (Indeed, some writers claim it is the only case of "genocide.") Both fallacies affect and mar research and teaching and often conceal hidden political or moral agendas that need to be made explicit. >> Back to top |
