Ph.D., MSW, is senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, Department for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, while on leave of absence as Professor of Sociology and Social Work at Southwest Minnesota State University in the USA. His research, writing and teaching over the past 20 years have focussed on war, nuclear weapons, genocide, and human rights. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Genocide Research and the Journal of Human Rights. Markusen is a member of the academic advisory group for the Stockholm International Forum 2004.

Publications include: The Genocidal Mentality: Nazi Holocaust and Nuclear Threat (with Robert Jay Lifton), The Holocaust and Strategic Bombing: Genocide and Total War in the Twentieth Century (David Kopf).
