Youk Chhang

Mr Youk Chhang, Director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia, is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide. He has dedicated his work to the memory of his mother and all the mothers of Cambodia. The Cambodia Documentation Center, located in Phnom Penh, was created in January 1995 as a field office of Yale University’s Cambodian Genocide Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State pursuant to the United States Genocide Justice Act of 1994. The Documentation Center of Cambodia became an autonomous institute in 1997, and now receives funds from a variety of sources in Europe, Asia, and America. The project has two major aims: 1) to advance understanding of Pol Pot’s regime for Cambodians and others who may wish to pursue legal redress for war crimes, genocide and other crimes against humanity in Democratic Kampuchea between 1975 and 1979, and 2) to prevent the return of the Killing Fields to Cambodia through legal and peaceful means. Its tasks include documentation, research, the mapping of the killing fields and burial sites, family tracing, legal training and related projects. Youk Chhang’s work has included the preservation of Tuol Sleng, the former Khmer Rouge interrogation and killing center also known as S-21.
