Michael Melchior Chief Rabbi of the Norwegian Jewish Community, 1980-1999. Serves as Rav Posek for a new congregation in West Talpiot, Jerusalem. Awarded the Norwegian Nobel Institute's Prize for Tolerance and Bridge-Building. Melchior is International Director of the Elie Wiesel Foundation as well as an administrator of varous human rights, immigration and educational organizations. Chairman of Meimad's Executive Committee, 1996. In May 1999 elected to Knesset as Meimad's top candidate. July 1999 Cabinet Minister for Israeli Society and the World Jewish Community, which includes combatting antisemitism. From August 1999 until March 2001, he served as Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, responsible for Diaspora and social affairs. He served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from March 2001 until October 2002. In January 2005, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Education, Culture and Sports. >> Back to top |
