Report from Seminar 4 C on the Role and influence of media Presentation by Dr. Marie Gillespie Presentation by Mr. Rafal Pankowski Presentation by Mr. Toralf Staud Presentation by Mr. Carl Wennerstrand Presentation by Mr. Rafal Pankowski Pankowski, Rafal STOWARZYSZENIE ‘NIGDY WI•CEJ’, ‘NEVER AGAIN’ ASSOCIATION What is Nigdy Wiêcej?
Our group was established in 1992 in response to the growing wave of racism and anti-Semitism in postcommunist Poland. Our aim is to promote human rights, multicultural understanding and to contribute to the development of a democratic civil society in Poland. Nigdy Wiêcej is particularly concerned with the problem of education against racial and ethnic prejudices among the young. Nigdy Wiêcej is an independent organisation, not linked to any political party. What does Nigdy Wiêcej do? Since 1994 Nigdy Wiêcej has produced a regular publication in the form of .NIGDY WIÊCEJ. magazine, providing reliable information on the various extremist and racist groups operating in Poland and in the rest of Europe. Nigdy Wiêcej works with other organisations internationally such as the London-based international anti-fascist magazine .Searchlight., the European anti-racist network UNITED for Intercultural Action as well as with partners in Eastern European countries. Many of the authors for the magazine .NIGDY WIÊCEJ. are well known experts in the field of ultra-nationalism in Eastern Europe. At present .NIGDY WIÊCEJ. is published four times a year. The Nigdy Wiêcej Association also provides information directly to journalists and institutions interested in the problem of racism and xenophobia. The Nigdy Wiêcej archives are a nearly complete representation of most racist, anti-Semitic, and neo-fascist publications produced in Poland since 1989. Nigdy Wiêcej has been consulted by numerous programs on the national television, as well as assisted in writing many articles for the national press (e.g. for .Gazeta Wyborcza. - Poland.s largest-circulation daily newspaper). We have provided expertise to the Parliamentary Committee on Ethnic Minorities. The goal of Nigdy Wiêcej is to raise the awareness of the need for ethnic and religious tolerance in a democratic society. The Nigdy Wiêcej Association is also working towards the co-ordination of all anti-racist activities in Poland. We have collaborated with other anti-racist and anti-fascist groups as well as with minority organisations all over the country. In 1995-97 together with the Polish Union of Jewish Students we organised and ran a successful campaign demanding a ban on neo-nazi, fascist and racist organisations to be included in the new Constitution of the Polish Republic. Throughout the campaign Nigdy Wiêcej collaborated with MPs from all major political parties. We briefed members of the Parliamentary Constitutional Committee, provided information to the media and mobilised public opinion through collecting signatures and sending letters to Parliament in support of our campaign. Our latest work At present Nigdy Wiêcej is focusing on two campaigns aiming at raising the level of anti-racist sensitivity among young people: • .Music Against Racism. is a campaign supported by top rock artists in the country, including Kazik, Kult, Big Cyc, T.Love and many others. We have organised concerts under the title .Music Against Racism.. In November 1997 a compilation record was released featuring songs with an anti-racist message. In December 1998 another anti-racist compilation was released, featuring among others Chumbawamba and Zion Train. This campaign is run in co-operation with an independent music label, QQRYQ Productions. • .Let.s Kick Racism Out Of Football. aims at removing racist and chauvinist attitudes prevailing among sports fans. We promote anti-racism at football grounds in co-operation with sport journalists, players and social organisations. We support anti-racist grass-roots initiatives among the fans. >> Back to top |
