On July 20, 2011, approximately 50 participants from Trea commune, including commune council members, religious leaders, religious teachers and students and women, gathered at the community meeting hall in Trea 2 village, Trea commune, Kroch Chmar district, Kampong Cham province to welcome the release of the first ever book on Cham women’s experience during the Khmer Rouge regime. The book’s author, Farina So, is a Cham Muslim who spent four years researching for this book and she plans to distribute the monographs to several Cham communities across the kingdom.

Trea 2 village is approximately 35 kilometers to the North of Kampong Cham Town along the Mekong River. The village is known as the center of religious teaching about Islam.

“The Hijab of Cambodia: Memories of Cham Muslim After the Khmer Rouge” is the third book written about Cham Muslim people of Cambodia. The first and second are Oukoubah: Genocide Justice for the Cham Muslims under Democratic Kampuchea (2002), and The Cham Rebellion Survivors' Stories from the Villages (2006), both written by Osman Ysa.

However, this third book has had more impact than the previous ones, according to DC-Cam’s Director, Youk Chhang. “The Hijab of Cambodia” is the first written about Cham women’s experiences of the Khmer Rouge and it was the first written by a Cham woman. (Text by Socheat Nhean).
