Hans Blix


Doctor of Law, Stockholm University (1959). Appointed Associate Professor in International Law (1960). Honorary Doctorate from Moscow State University (1987). Recipient of the Henry de Wolf Smyth Award (Washington DC, 1988). Former Head of Department at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Served as Legal Adviser on International Law (1963–1976). Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (1976). Former Minister for Foreign Affairs (1978). Member of Sweden’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly (1961–1981). Member of the Swedish delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva (1962–1978). Leader of the Liberal Campaign Committee in favor of retention of the Swedish nuclear energy programme in the referendum (1980). Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (1981–1997). Former Director-General of the IAEA and UNMOVIC Chairman. Until recently, UN Chief Weapons Inspector in Iraq.
