Xanana Gusmão

Xanana Gusmão is the elected president of East Timor, which gained its independence on 20 May 2002. From the early 1980s he led the resistance against the Indonesian occupation of East Timor as leader of the armed resistance Falintil and of the National Council of Timorese Resistance (CNRT). In 1992 he was captured by Indonesian forces and sentenced to prison for life.As East Timor voted for independence in 1999 he was released and returned to East Timor to receive a hero’s welcome. Following the violence which surrounded East Timor’s recession, Xanana Gusmão has played a key role in the reconciliation process and in the return of East Timorese refugees in Indonesia.
