Elisabeth Rehn


Elisabeth Rehn has had a long political career in Finland and has extensive international experience. Former Finnish Minister of Defence and Minister of Equality Affairs in the 1990s. Member of Parliament from 1979 to 1995, Member of the European Parliament from 1995 to 1996. Between 1995 and 1998 she served as UN Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Croatia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In 1998-99 she served as UN Under Secretary- General, Special Representative of the Secretary- General in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Between 2001 and 2003 Elisabeth Rehn was UNIFEM’s independent expert on women’s role in peace-building. She currently serves as Chair of Working Table 1 on Democratization and Human Rights of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe (SPSEE).
