Dear Mr. Richie,
We are writing
with regard to the Cambodian Genocide Databases (CGDBs)
managed by Yale University’s Department of Archives & Manuscripts
and the
Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam). As you know, we hope and
intend to include searchable versions of the CGDBs on our Internet
site in the near future. We recognize that certain information that
we intend to display is copyrighted property of the Cambodian
Genocide Program (CGP) and Yale University. This letter describes
our plans for ensuring that we properly acknowledge Yale copyrights
when appropriate.
We acknowledge
the copyright of Yale and the CGP over the presentation and
arrangement of the facts that comprise the databases, and we will
include language to that effect on the index page of each of the
CGDBs featured on our Internet site. We also acknowledge that Yale
and the CGP possess copyright over all records compiled before
September 2001. Therefore, any such record appearing on our web site
will include an additional field marking it as copyrighted property
of Yale University and by the CGP. By contrast, database entries
added during or after September 2001 will not bear such indications.
We hope that
this arrangement will be satisfactory to you as a way to deal with
the issue of copyright protection. We appreciate your permission to
feature duly acknowledged entries copyrighted by Yale and the CGP on
our web site. We will continue to provide you with copies of our
updated database according to established procedures and look
forward to maintaining our strong ties in the search for memory and
justice in Cambodia.
Please do not
hesitate to contact us at [855] 23-211-875 or via email at
dccam@online.com.kh if you have any questions or comments on our
planned procedures. Our Legal Advisor, John D. Ciorciari, will also
be pleased to meet you in New Haven at a mutually convenient time if
it is helpful. We thank you for your consideration and look forward
to hearing from you.
