The Trial Chamber of Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC) today reopened its hearing to examine an accused Ieng Thirith's health condition to stand trial. The court started at 10:30 a.m. Inside the court gallery as well as the public gallery were full of participants ranging from diplomats, peasants, students, Buddhist monks, Cham Muslims and media agents.
Ieng Thirith, Former Khmer Rouge Social Affair Minister, is one of the accused in Case 002, who was found too ill to stand trial last year. As consequence, the Trial Chamber ordered a release of her in November 2011, from the provisional detention center of the ECCC. However, the Supreme Court Chamber overturned the order and requested for following treatment for another six months.
Under her role during the Khmer Rouge era between 1975 and 1979, which killed millions of people, Ieng Thirith was charged of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. She was placed at the detention center of ECCC since November 2007.
The hearing today and tomorrow will possibly be the last historical events to determine Ieng Thirith's fate at the ECCC.
