The Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport held an inauguration ceremony of the anti-genocide memorial in Bak Touk High School on March 14, 2011. The deeply meaningful memorial will educate young generations about the history of Democratic Kampuchea regime and the suffering of the Cambodian people between 1975 and 1979. It contributes to the prevention of the reoccurrence of such atrocious crimes and move forward to the future. The memorial is also important in the process of national reconciliation and healing. The memorial consists of two slogans which read: “Talking about experiences during the Khmer Rouge regime is to promote reconciliation and to educate children about forgiveness and tolerance” and “Learning about the history of Democratic Kampuchea is to prevent genocide.” The slogans will appear in their mind as students walk pass the memorial every day.

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by H. E. Chum Teav Ton Sa-Im, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and H.E. Mr. Chea Cheat, Head of Phnom Penh´s Municipal Office of Education. About 2,000 students, teachers and distinguished guests also participated in this important event. During the inauguration, DC-Cam distributed 300 copies of “A History of Democratic Kampuchea (1975-1979),” monthly magazine Searching for the Truth and anti-genocide posters to students and teachers.

Bak Touk High School was first established during Sangkum Reast Niyum regime of King Norodom Sihanouk, and it was named King Ang Chann I Primary School. After the coup in 1970, the school was renamed Bak Touk. During the Khmer Rouge period, the school was turned into warehouse, farmhouse, and prison. On May 18, 1979, the school was re-opened. The school has been upgraded to Lower Secondary School and currently a High School.
