On October 17, 2010,
DC-Cam’s Genocide Education Project conducted a Public Education
Forum to distribute and
discuss the textbook A History of Democratic Kampuchea (1975-1979)
in the meeting hall of
Wat Phnom pagoda, Wat Phnom village, Kampaeng commune, Kiri
Vong district, Takeo
province. Participants in the forum included 80 students, 60 villagers,
five teachers and eight
monks. Kiri Vong is a remote district of Cambodia close to the
Vietnamese border.
Under the Khmer Rouge, it was called district 109 of region 13,
Southwest Zone.
According to Socheat Nhean, who has conducted extensive research on the
chain of command and
sociopolitical structure of theSouthwest Zone, district 109 was led by
one of Ta Mok’s
brother-in-laws, Tith, and all village and commune chiefs were from Tramkok
district, Ta Mok’s
homeland, because they were more trusted by the Khmer Rouge.
