GENOCIDE: THE IMPORTANCE OF CASE 002
DC-Cam Exhibition at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
The Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) inaugurates its latest
exhibition Genocide - The Importance of Case 002 at the Tuol Sleng
Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia starting on June 5, 2010.
The exhibition - the sixth of its kind undertaken by DC-Cam at the
museum - is housed on the third story of Building C.
The exposition features photographs, archival materials and
pertinent information on the historic and most important Khmer Rouge
trial of four senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea -Nuon Chea,
Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith, and Khieu Samphan. This latest endeavor by
DC-Cam aims to apprise the Cambodian and the international audience
of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) Case
002.
The importance of ECCC Case 002 lies in addressing the sundry
unanswered questions about the Khmer Rouge and also in bringing some
justice to Cambodians who suffered greatly and lost loved ones. Youk
Chhang, the Director of the DC-Cam, notes: “These leaders have not
admitted any responsibility for the crimes of that period but
instead blame it on the lower cadre and others. Their trial offers
an important chance to how that the DK regime made decisions that
caused the deaths of nearly 2 million Cambodians.”
Genocide - The Importance of Case 002 comes at a crucial time as
Cambodia and the world are awaiting the verdict of ECCC Case 001 of
S-21 prison chief Duch (Kaing Geuk Eav), the case which will set
precedence to the upcoming one.
