Pol Pot
was born “Saloth Sar” on January 25, 1925, the Year of the Ox, in Prek Sbou Village,
Stung Sen District, Kampong Thom Province, in what would later become Region 43
of the Northern Zone of Democratic Kampuchea. He used many other names during
his life, including “Comrade Pol,” Comrade Secretary, Angkar, Hai, Brother
Number One, Brother 87, Committee 870 and Comrade Pouk.
Pol
Pot's father was Phem Saloth and his mother was Duk Nem. He has
five siblings. His first wife was Khieu Thirith's older sister
Kheiu Ponnary, thus making he and Ieng Sary brothers-in-law.

On October
9, 1975, the Standing Committee placed Pol Pot in charge of
military affairs and the economy. On March 30, 1976, he was
appointed as First Minister (Prime Minister) of Democratic
Kampuchea.
