A Takaev woman who worked as a midwife at Po-1 in 1978
stated that hospital chairwoman Minh did constant rounds to make
sure the infants and children (12 and under) did not go without,
ensuring items provided by the Organization were properly
distributed and the young patients ate well. This was what the
Organization and the big shots said. Deserts were made for the
children to eat every one to three days. Minh emphasized the
children were the future of Cambodia. However, the woman stated,
merely for breaking something, she was sent to Phnum Chetreuh and
Pich Nil to break rocks for three months, commuting from Phnom Penh,
leaving at 6AM and returning at 6PM. Another reason for this
punishment was that she had refused an appointment as a unit
chairwoman, pleading that she was virtually illiterate and had no
public speaking skills. After three months of this labour reform,
Minh told her she could go back to looking after children, even
asking her to look after Minh's own child. This source also
recalled that Ieng Thirith was in charge of the Ministry of Social
Action, saying that every once in a long while, Thirith did rounds
inspecting the patients, saying to feed the children better, so they
would not be thin.
